CARENS is an entry level Multi-Purpose-Vehicle / MPV and available since 1999. The 4th generation of Caren has left the MPV type styling for more of crossover/ SUV type DNA. Developed primarily for Indian and certain emerging markets. Carens is available in 3 row with 6 or 7 seat configuration.
NO this is not a replacement for SORENTO. This is a smaller footprint vehicle and primary compete vehicles like Honda BR-V/ Mobilio, Toyota Innova Crysta. It shares its platform with KIA SELTOS , HYUNDAI CRETA. As of dimensions, it is 178.7” long, 71” wide while it has wheelbase of 109.4”. For reference the current KIA Sportage in Pakistan is 176.5” long , 72.2” and have a wheelbase of 105.1”.
Styling wise on exterior it is influenced from the newer Sportage as well as KIA Soul. Plastic cladding, roof rails , skid plates gives it an impression of a SUV. Comes with 16” alloy wheels, LED taillights and headlights. On the interior, it is a modern looking vehicle. Comes with a 10.25” KIA connect infotainment system which is capable of over the air updates. Cell phone integration with google and apple connectivity.
An optional 8 speaker Bose audio system is also available as well as 64 color ambient lighting, air purifier ventilated front seats, sunroof. A lot of storage which includes tables on the back side of front seats as well as under seat storage trays. Yes there is a third row but obviously for little kids and it will not be a comfortable space for full grown humans.
As of power, the model will be available in three engine options in India , official numbers as far as power and torque are awaited. A naturally aspirated 1.5L inline 4 with 113HP and 144NM of torque. This will be available with 6 speed manual as well as an option of CVT.
1.4L T-GDI /Turbocharged making 138HP& 242NM. The Turbo engine is available with 6 speed manual or a DCT. The third engine variant is a 1.5L Diesel which makes 113HP & 250NM. Diesel will be offered with manual as well as conventional automatic. When it comes to safety, all variants will come standard with 6 airbags, ABS, Hill start, vehicle stability control, parking sensors, TPMS.
As of pricing, KIA India didn't reveal any details but it will be produced locally and will go for sale in India next year. Don’t expect CARENS anytime soon in Pakistan although it could be a great addition.
